Yofo; Molotov

Today I’ll update a very crazy song, man! Look that: the chorus goes like this: “Yofo zafa fofo, yofo zafa fofo / Yofo zafa fofo yofo nofo cofo jofo!” (lol) I have no idea what that means. I only know that is very nonsense be singing around “yofo zafa fofo”. I prefer to whistle! Hey, this song is very cool!



This song is called “Yofo” and is sung by the Mexican hip hop, pop rock, rapcore... whatever! group named Molotov. As the name suggests, Molotov is a band politically engaged and uses humor in the lyrics to protest against, for example, the situation of illegal immigration in USA.

“Yofo” is a song from the latest album of the band, the 2007 “Eternamiente”. With this album they won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Album, Duo or Group at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2008. And they gave me one more song for my collection! ^^

Amorcito Corazón; Pedro Infante

This song, which is one of the most popular songs from mexican old cinema, was composed in the faraway year of 1948 by Pedro de Urdimalas (lyrics) and Manuel Esperón (melody) and was perpetuated by the singer-actor Pedro Infante in his musical films: initially in “Nosotros los Pobres” and later in the sequences “Ustedes los Ricos” and “Pepe El Toro”.

Pedro Infante, in the role of Pepe El Toro, does romantic couple with Blanca Estela Pavón, which is Celia “la Chorreada”. In the movie “Nosotros los Pobres” the carpentry scene, in which the “Amorcito Corazón” is sung by Pepe para su amada novia, is memorable. She, in returning of the serenade, whistles between the verses of the song.


But Pedro de Urdimalas did not compose the song for the movies, he did it for a love that shook his heart... *

Tan Joven y Tan Viejo; Joaquín Sabina

Joaquín Sabina tienes sessenta anõs i es un cantautor y poeta esp... oops! xD

Joaquín Sabina is a 60 years old. He is a spanish singer, song-writer and poet born in Úbeda, Andalucia. His work is appreciated throughout the Spanish-speaking world, especially in Argentina.
This song “Tan Joven y Tan Viejo” was written in 1996 when he had already reached a wide world success and recorded on his twelfth album named “Yo, mi, me, contigo”. It is his most autobiographical song, speaking about his gains and losses throughtout his life, playing a melancholic guitar, singing melancholically and then, in the lasts seconds of the song, whistling a very very sad ending, the end of the history of a man “tan joven y tan viejo, like a rolling stone”.

En la que el Bernat se’t Troba; Manel

Hola amigos! Before the end of the month, I’m gonna update some Spanish songs I’ve found here and there. And there’s a lot of them! So let’s go to the first song because this week is looking to get pretty busy for me!

 Arriba! Andale! Andale!

And in that ludic mood that Speedy Gonzales inspired me I will start with a very enjoyable song, so playful, so burlesque. “En la que el Bernat se’t Troba” is a song by Manel, a pop group from Barcelona which has, in its debut album, a lot of influence of Catalan folk music. “Els Millors Professors Europeus” (The Best European Teachers), 2008, was well received by critics and it was considered by the Catalan Enderrock Magazine the best album of pop-rock of last year. It was also well-ranked by others publications.

The song talks about a casual dating in Barcelona, a night of love between a man and a woman. Both the videoclip was recorded on the Barcelona streets — the members of the band acting like street performers, singing and whistling while they saunter through this beautiful city. The band makes a choir of whistlings with some simple and contagious notes (only the guy who plays sax doesn’t whistle. By the way, what a amusing sax solo!)

Ah, Manel sings its songs in Catalan, the frenchified cousin of Spanish. In Catalan, “whistling” is “xiulet”.

Mellow Doubt; Teenage Fanclub

With you, the best whistling song for NME magazine and the most hard for me to find what to say about it, Mellow Doubt by Teenage Fanclub!

“Mellow Doubt” is a love ballad by the eternal undergrounder TFC, which was recorded in 1995 for the album “Grand Prix”. It was written by Norman Blake, singer and guitarist of the band. The whistling appears in the solo of the song and makes a duo following the chorus melody with a mumble which is probably Raymond McGinley’s, who shares with Blake the composition of the songs, the microphone and the lead guitar.

Such a pity I hadn’t find more about the song, but if I do, I’ll update here.

Disney Girls (1957); The Beach Boys

There’s not much information about this song on the internet. What I found in its Wikipedia article is the usual, that is:

‘Disney Girls (1957)’ is a song written by Bruce Johnston for the American pop band The Beach Boys. It was released on their 1971 album Surf's Up. The lead vocals are by Johnston.

“‘Disney Girls (1957)’ has proven to be one of Bruce Johnston’s most enduring songs, still occasionally performed by The Beach Boys in concert to this day. It has been covered by many artists, including Art Garfunkel, Cass Elliott, Jack Jones, Captain & Tennille, and even Johnston himself, on his 1977 solo album Going Public. Cass Elliot’s version (from the album Cass Elliot) is notable for featuring both Johnston and Carl Wilson
.”

What I can say about it’s that “Disney Girls” has a peaceful melody with “little drops of sadness” but tells about good dreams and hope of having a delightful life with the girl he felt in love. The whistling notes in the end make it even more melancholic.

I have nothing about the whistle, by the way.

Eye Know; De La Soul

Yow! The third place brings a hip hop trio.

De La Soul is an American hip hop group formed in 1987 in New York. They are the avant-garde of mixing jazz with hip hop and influences a lot of artists, like Black Eyed Peas and Camp Lo. Unfortunately, the trio made success with only their first album, one of the best hip hop albuns in the world; the other ones had insignificant sales, despite receiving positive reviews from critics.

In there debut album, considered the Album of the Year by NME, is “Eye Know”. It reached #14 on the UK singles chart. But in USA it wasn’t released as a single.

Like the other songs on the album, Eye Know has a very positive message, a contradiction with the custom of hip hop bands of that time. The song has samples from Steely Dan’s “Peg”, Sly & The Family Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song” and a bit of the Ottis Reding’s famous whistle from his “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”.
Eye Know talks about love.

Engel; Rammstein

Our 4th place is occupied by the German band Rammstein! The first contribution in German language to the blog. =)

People labeled the Rammstein’s style as “industrial metal” which seems to be a mix of thrash metal with electronic music. The band, in turn, entitle their music as Tanz Metall (dance metal). One industrial metal vertent is the Neue Deutsche Härte (New German Hardness) which originated in ‘90s Germany and that is, it seems, the one that best fits Rammstein. Regardless of musical style, Rammstein is the best-selling German-language band in the world.

As they use too much samplers, synthesizers and all this electronic stuff, the whistle in the song couldn’t be done otherwise. But it is, admittedly, a whistle! ^^''

“Engel” was released as a single in April 1997, the third single of the band, and recorded on his second album, Senhsucht, launched in August of the same year. The song is one of their romantic tragedy and talks “about the questioning of angels and the afterlife (‘Engel’ is German for ‘Angel’). It could also be about living life without out the rules of religion stopping you.

There is an English version that was used in the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and can be seen below, after the lyrics, audio and original videoclip.

La La Love You; Pixies

Ueba! I found another magazine toplist! This time by NME Magazine, which listed completely different songs from those selected by Rolling Stone Magazine. Well, I think I’ll do like them and update them from 5th to 1st place. So let’s go to the 5th, which is... “La La Love You” by Pixies.

The Pixies were one of the pioneering bands of alternative rock, having their roots in punk and surf rock, and influenced bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. “La La Love You” was recorded in 1989 in their 2nd studio album, named “Doolittle”. “Doolittle” was considered the 2nd best album of all time by NME.

“La La Love You” is sung by drummer Dave Lovering, the only song which the drummer does the vocals. The whistles are made by Kim Deal and Black Francis, as you can see in this beautiful live show. Below is an excerpt from the book “The Pixies’ Doolittle (33 1/3)” by Ben Sisario, that speaks about this song:

“It is the jokiest, cutest, dumbest song on the album, an upbeat goof with foxy-lady whistles and a Woody Woodypercker guitar riff that is all about love, love, love. ‘All I’m saying, pretty baby / La la love you, don’t mean maybe.’

“It’s bullshit, of course. ‘There is no love in here,’ Thompson told the NME. ‘Not a drop. I’ve never written a love song. It’s just like an abstract sort of joke… it’s just mimicking a really bad 1950s song, or maybe I should say 1980s. ‘First base, second base, third base, home run’ is a very Shakespearean crass joke in America, a crude joke for full copulation. I’m just being a minimalist as I can, but it conjures up lots of images — well, one image, I should say.’

“This joke — abstract, crass, crude — is a dig at the very idea of a love song. (…) The ‘la la’ bilge is sarcastically embraced as a kind of proof that pop music is by definition repetitive and banal. ‘If the song means something,’ he says, ‘then it’s just to be a wiseass.’

“The sneer begins right away, in the opening few seconds of the song. David Lovering starts with a bog come-on-get-your-drink-the-band’s-started-again beat, and the first dumb joke is a call-and-response huzzah shouted over the traps. ‘Shake your butt!’ goes the first guy, presumably with one hand raising high a bottle of Coors Light. The response, barely audible, comes from one of the nerds in the back: ‘Not too harrrd!’ The skit that follows unfolds with all the spin-the-bottle predictability of a real love song. Bass, drums, and acoustic guitar play it straight, while Joey Santiago does a smartass wink followed by various Martian interpolations of surf chords. The come a whistle, a ‘yeah,’ and lots of ‘ I love yous,’ sung tag-team style by each Pixie. (Santiago, panned right, can’t seem to enunciate at the mic.) As if all this was not enough to indicate a spoof, Thompson had the drummer sing it. Tunrs out Lovering was perfect for the part — he’s a cheesy crooner who can do a Rick Astley just as good as Rick Astley.

“‘To me, the biggest fuck-yous are not a song like ‘Tame,’’ Thompson says, ‘but it’s sort of like ‘La La Love You’ that’s the big fuck-you. In that it’s sort of like, oh yeah, I can scream and shout and be abrasive or whatever like the rest of you motherfuckers, but I’m willing to be truly dorky, you know what I mean? I’m willing to be silly.”

Tomorrow Comes Today; Gorillaz

I was sure that the virtual band Gorillaz had a whistling song, but I didn't know which one. So I took its two albums (Demon Days and Gorillaz) from my bookcase and started to listen them backwards. “Demon Days” ended and “Gorillaz” came after. None whistle. But I was singing happy and loudly and then suddenly I heard D2 whistling in the end of the song “Tomorrow Comes Today”! I was sure of it!

“Tomorrow Comes Today” is a song by its first album and its fourth single. It reached #33 in the UK Single Charts.

The videoclip (directed by Jamie Hewlett, the man who draws!) consists of static drawings of the Gorillaz with pictures of streets of London in the background. The song has the Gorillaz trip hop style, which sounds great with a seductive bass line and a lazy country harmonica doing the riff.

Chori Chori Rum Gori Se; Udit Narayan

As you can imagine, I’m a little neurotic with this blog. And those who suffer are my friends, family, etc... that have to be listening to me tell about these songs and, worse, have to try to remember the ones they know. I always have to say “no, Patience is already there”, “Wind of Change too...” =P

One of my friends introduced me to this. She loves to watch soap operas and here in Brazil is on TV a hindu-themed soap opera, which is called “Caminho das Índias” and is on Rede Globo. I don’t watch it, but it’s making a great success.

This time I won’t do as I did in the “French week” and try to speak Hindi, but the Indians who frequent my blog be sure that you are very welcome!

Well, fortunately I found the Brazilian blog Cinema Indiano, intended to give each and every information about Indian cinema, especially, but also deals with various subjects such as music and curious things about famous people. In this blog I discovered that the song was written by Sameer and Roshan and sung by bollywoodian music idols Udit Narayan and Abhijeet. This song was composed in 2000 for the movie “Festival” and later, two years later to be exact, was used in “The Guru” movie, becoming world famous.

Breakdown; Guns Nʼ Roses

Enough or are there any others? Well, If another one appears I'll post only in October or November. =P

“Breakdown” is on the fourth studio album, Use Your Illusion II. According WikipediaAxl Rose has stated that the vocal ending to the song is the only thing he was not satisfied with on the Use Your Illusion albums. Additionally, Slash has stated that it was one of the most complicated songs to record on the album. According to him, the guitar, drum, and piano parts were hard to synchronize — drummer Matt Sorum ‘lost it’ a couple of times trying to get the drums just right.

For lack of better words to describe the song, here I leave pieces of an excellent review done by a fan:

When Guns N’ Roses released their Use Your Illusion albums I & II simultaneously, they were at their creative peak. Coming off their massive Appetite For Destruction sales, all eyes were on the band to prove they weren’t just a one-trick pony.

Use Your Illusion II (UYI2) is considered the darker, softer album. Although both albums demonstrated a more polished G’N’R, UYI2 was far more political and personal than the UYI1. It contained songs like ‘Civil War’, and ‘Get in the Ring’ that dealt with matters of violence and media bias/framing. It’s also considered to be the ‘artsier’ of the two albums, with a handful of songs clocking in at over seven minutes in length and includes the experimental Axl Rose cut, ‘My World’.

“‘Breakdown’ is track seven off of UYI2. Written by Axl Rose, it is one of the most distinguishable songs off the album as it opens with a banjo. As Slash explains, ‘That’s a five-string banjo tuned to guitar because I don’t know anything about banjo. It’s something I wrote off-the-cuff when Axl came up with that piano part. I had this idea that it should sound like that so I tuned it like a guitar. I don’t know how to play banjo’. The rolling piano keeps the song pulsating along as Axl unfolds the tale of heartache and mistrust.

The last part of the song, Axl’s monologue, was taken from the film Vanishing Point. He explains, ‘There is nothing on the record that didn’t come out the way we wanted, except maybe the vocal speech (the monologue) at the end of ‘Breakdown’. The mix on the speakers that we did the mastering on was loud enough, but on other sets of speakers it’s not. It depends on what stereo you’re hearing it on, and we didn’t know that.

One in a Million; Guns Nʼ Roses

“One in a Million” is one of the most controversial songs of GN’R. It was written entirely by Axl and has negative post against blacks, homosexuals, police and immigrants. And still asks for radicals and racists don’t point their fingers at him, he is just “a small town white boy, just tryin’ to make ends meet.” Rose said it’s just a misunderstanding, as you can read forth in an interview he granted from Rolling Stone magazine back in 1989 (copied from here), but I don’t know, he has at least a very peculiar way of seeing life.

The other members of the band wanted the song wasn’t released, but Rose made his point of view. The paragraph below is a piece of an interview with Slash for Rolling Stone, this time in February 1991.

After the enormous success of Guns N’ Roses’ debut album, “Appetite for Destruction”, and the follow-up EP, GN’R Lies, the group found itself facing serious trouble. For starters, the band was ostracized because of the lyrics in the GN’R Lies song “One in a Million,” which included references to “faggots” and “niggers”. The charges of racism particularly affected Slash, whose father is white and mother is black. “When Axl first came up with the song and really wanted to do it, I said I didn’t think it was very cool,” says Slash. “But Axl gets very adamant about expressing himself, and his lyrics are very direct. He’s very honest, and he’s got his reasons... I don’t regret doing ‘One in a Million’, I just regret what we’ve been through because of it and the way people have perceived our personal feelings.”

Now, Axl’s defense:

So far the song that’s inspired the most controversy in the band’s short career has been “One in a Million”. How did you come to write that song?
“One in a Million” was written while sitting in the apartment of my friend West Arkeen, who’s like the sixth member of the band. I wrote it at his house, sitting around bored watching TV. I can’t really play guitar too well, I only play the top two strings, and I would write a little piece at a time. I started writing about wanting to get out of LA, getting away for a little while. I’d been down to the downtown-LA Greyhound bus station. If you haven’t been there, you can’t say shit to me about what goes on and about my point of view. There are a large number of black men selling stolen jewelry, crack, heroin and pot, and most of the drugs are bogus. Rip-off artists selling parking spaces to parking lots that there’s no charge for. Trying to misguide every kid that gets off the bus and doesn’t quite know where he’s at or where to go, trying to take the person for whatever they’ve got. That’s how I hit town. The thing with “One in a Million” is, basically, we’re all one in a million, we’re all here on this earth. We’re one fish in a sea. Let’s quit fucking with each other, fucking with me.

The lyrics have incited a lot of protest, so let’s go over them line by line. Let’s start with one of the verses, “Police and niggers, that’s right/Get outta my way/Don’t need to buy none/ Of your gold chains today.”

I used words like police and niggers because you’re not allowed to use the word nigger. Why can black people go up to each other and say, “Nigger,” but when a white guy does it all of a sudden it’s a big put-down. I don’t like boundaries of any kind. I don’t like being told what I can and what I can’t say. I used the word nigger because it’s a word to describe somebody that is basically a pain in your life, a problem. The word nigger doesn’t necessarily mean black. Doesn’t John Lennon have a song “Woman Is the Nigger of the World”? There’s a rap group, N.W.A., Niggers with Attitude. I mean, they’re proud of that word. More power to them. Guns N’ Roses ain’t bad ... N.W.A. is baad! Mr. Bob Goldthwait said the only reason we put these lyrics on the record was because it would cause controversy and we’d sell a million albums. Fuck him! Why’d he put us in his skit? We don’t just do something to get the controversy, the press.

How about the next verse? Immigrants and faggots/They make no sense to me/ They come to our country/And think they’ll do as they please/ Like start some mini-Iran or spread some fuckin’ disease.” Why that reference to immigrants?

When I use the word immigrants, what I’m talking about is going to a 7-11 or Village pantries — a lot of people from countries like Iran, Pakistan, China, Japan et cetera, get jobs in these convenience stores and gas stations. Then they treat you as if you don’t belong here. I've been chased out of a store with Slash by a six-foot-tall Iranian with a butcher knife because he didn’t like the way we were dressed. Scared me to death. All I could see in my mind was a picture of my arm on the ground, blood going everywhere. When I get scared, I get mad. I grabbed the top of one of these big orange garbage cans and went back at him with this shield, going, “Come on!” I didn’t want to back down from this guy. Anyway that’s why I wrote about immigrants. Maybe I should have been more specific and said, “Joe Schmoladoo at the 7-11 and faggots make no sense to me.” That’s ridiculous! I summed it up simply and said, “Immigrants.”

How about the use of the word “faggots”?

I’ve had some very bad experiences with homosexuals. When I was first coming to Los Angeles, I was about eighteen or nineteen. On my first hitchhiking ride, this guy told me I could crash at his hotel. I went to sleep and woke up while this guy was trying to rape me. I threw him down on the floor. He came at me again. I went running for the door. He came at me. I pinned him between the door and the wall. I had a straight razor, and I pulled the razor and said, “Don’t ever touch me! Don’t ever think about touching me! Don’t touch yourself and think about me! Nothing!” Then I grabbed my stuff and split with no place to go, no sleep, in the middle of nowhere outside of St. Louis. That’s why I have the attitude I have.

Are you anti-homosexual then?
I’m pro-heterosexual. I can’t get enough of women, and I don’t see the same thing that other men can see in men. I’m not into gay or bisexual experiences. But that’s hypocritical of me, because I’d rather see two women together than just about anything else. That happens to be my personal, favorite thing.

How about gay-bashing? Have you ever beaten up somebody simply because of their sexual preference?

No! I never have. The most I do is, like, on the way to the Troubadour in “Boystown”, on Santa Monica Boulevard, I’ll yell out the car window, “Why don’t you guys like pussy?” ‘Cause I’m confused. I don’t understand it. Anti-homosexual? I’m not against them doing what they want to do as long as it’s not hurting anybody else and they’re not forcing it upon me. I don’t need them in my face or, pardon the pun, up my ass about it.

The “One in a Million” lyrics about “faggots” who “spread some fuckin’ disease” got GN’R bounced from an AIDS benefit in New York by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, one of the groups that was involved with putting on the show. How did you feel about that?

We’re in no way associated with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, except that David Geffen is on the board of directors for the concert and he’s the owner of our record company. We were asked to do this, and we wanted to contribute some money to help stop a deadly disease that’s killing humans of all kinds. A friend of mine who’s homosexual and was largely responsible for the record companies taking notice of us was upset about it because we didn’t even get a chance to clear ourselves, to make good. AIDS is something very scary. The concert was something we wanted to do and felt it was important to do but we were denied the opportunity. We were even denied the opportunity to say anything about it. It was just publicly announced that we weren’t allowed to do it because the Gay Men’s Health Crisis wouldn’t let us. I don’t feel they have the right to deny the money and attention they would have gotten from us playing. It’s pride, it’s ignorant and it’s childish.

Civil War; Guns Nʼ Roses

Well, now that the blog has already a good variety of posted songs, I’ll, over this week, update only the Guns N’ Roses songs, even because the band has a lot of whistling songs. I guess one week won’t be enough. Maybe one month won’t... xD

And we’ll start with “Civil War”. This song was done by Axl, Slash and Duff McKagan; Axl and Duff wrote the lyrics and Slash composed the melody. McKagan said in a interview with the Rockline radio: “Basically it was a riff that we would do at soundchecks. Axl came up with a couple of lines at the beginning. I went in a peace march, when I was a little kid, with my mom. I was like 4 years old. For Martin Luther King. And that’s when: ʻDid you wear the black arm band when they shot the man who said: 'Peace could last forever?’. It’s just true-life experiences, really”.

This song is politically charged, with many historical and popular references. It doesn't mean only the American Civil War, althought the whistlings are part of the song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” a song (which became its hymn) made by Patrick Gilbert (under his pseudonym Louis Lambert) to his brother-in-law who was in the battlefield during the American Civil War.

We have too the inicial speech, which is sampled from the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke”; this famous speech happened when the protagonist Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) try to escape from prision and he’s captured, then the director, known only by Capitan (Strother Martin) says it in front of the other prisioners. Here is the strech, it's very cool see the man who speaks the beginning of Civil War:



And the other speech is quoted from a peruvian general, called “Camarada Artemio”. Maybe they chose it because it sounds quite controversial stating it’s necessary to anihilate to obtain peace.

Gambler, Madonna

Her Majesty, the Queen of Pop, Madonna! In her best 80’s style, singing and whistling the almost forgotten “Gambler”. Who did think she wouldn’t appear here, huh?

“Gambler” wasn’t released in USA because Madonna’s producers feared this song could take the place of her other singles from the album “Like a Virgin” which was ready to be pressed. But it was released in many European countries, in Japan, Australia and Latin America. It was, as the producers “feared”, a big success in these countries, peaking #4 in UK Single Charts. Despite being a hit, “Gambler” was released only as a single and never was in a studio album. It’s worth noting that Madonna wrote the song for the soundtrack movie “Vision Quest”.

I’m not sure but something tells me that isn’t she who whistles. Moreover, I imagine the whisting is “done” by a keyboard. Wanna bet?

Whistle for the Choir; The Fratellis

The Fratellis! Man, I love their music! These three guys are my favorite indie rock band ever! And I think they are the best ‘cause they have a peculiar dirty sound, a lively rhythm concerted with a cabaret atmosphere and amusing lyrics.

“Costello Music”, their debut album, is my favorite, it has so many good songs... “Flathead”, “Chelsea Dagger”, “Baby Fratelli” and... “Whistle for Choir”, a lovely and dancing heartbreak song.

The song was written by Jon Fratelli (or John Lawler, as you prefer) inspired by a girl he met one night and did not give a damn about him. It’d be called “Knickers In A Handbag” but the band producers force them to change the name. It reached #9 in the UK Singles Chart.

Games Without Frontiers; Peter Gabriel

NO! “She’s NOT so popular”! She is neither she! “Jeux Sans Frontieres” is the correct phrase that Kate Bush sings in the backvocal. Well, she’s really not so popular... >)
Peter Gabriel wrote “Games Without Frontiers” in 1980 for his third self-titled solo album, also known as “Mercury”. It reached #4 in UK top parades and #48 in US.

I could write many things about this song but I found in its Wikipedia article a so well explanation that I must only copy and paste here:

“The song’s title comes from a European game show, Jeux Sans Frontières, that featured teams competing for prizes while dressed in bizarre costumes. The British version of the show was called It’s a Knockout, a phrase that also appears in the song. The teams represented towns and cities from each country, so the games had an inevitable element of nationalism. While some games were simple races, others allowed one team to obstruct another.

“The lyrics are seen as a critique of nationalism and war, which the song portrays as essentially childish. The tag line of the song, ‘Games without frontiers, war without tears’ is a comment on the sublimation of the rivalries within Europe, caused by centuries of war, in a meaningless game. (Length:4:05) The name Lin Tai Yu, which appears in the song, belongs to a character from the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber.

“Chiang Ching, another name mentioned, refers either to the wife of Chairman Mao and a leader of the Cultural Revolution or to Chiang Ching-kuo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek, who was president of Taiwan at the time the song was written.

“Additionally, the end of the first verse refers to Hitler and Enrico Fermi: ‘Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Brit; Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it.’ Hitler started World War II in Europe, while Fermi’s nuclear reactor enabled the nuclear weapons which ended the war in Japan.

“The album version of the song includes the line ‘Whistling tunes we piss on the goons in the jungle’ before the second chorus. This was replaced for the single release with a more radio-friendly repeat of the line ‘Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle’ from the first chorus. The whistling is Gabriel along with producers Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham.”

Trois c’est trop?

Of course not! Bien sûr que non! I’ve found other songs (few of them, in fact) but have been hard to find their videoclip or their download links to post here, then I decided keep searching and update them later.
Between them there are: Henri Salvador, who made a song in which there are people whistling the River Kwai March called “Colonel Bogey” but there’s nothing on internet about it for download. And there is a good song by a rap group but in its live show the rappers don’t whistle, they mumble; I'm not sure about post now this kind of “half-whistled” songs in which the whistling isn’t a primacy.
Well, if you don’t mind, into tomorrow update there is a phrase sung in french. Ok?

I’d like to post this song tomorrow, because it’s friday and friday is the right day to relax and see cool videos before we’re out. But tomorrow isn’t another friday and I believe I have a better one to put here.

What a weeeeeird name for a band, huh? Not a band, a duo. This Drum & Bass french duo formed by Benjamin Sportes and Nicolas Kantorovwicz took each one his surnames and exchanged their last parts.

They have been together since 90’s when the Europe was invaded by a eletronic wave. His biggest hit is this which they whistle, which had already been used in a Renault Twingo commercial.

I think the song was composed all around the whistle, just see its name. But as what I think shouldn’t worth too much (or anything) I’m still looking for infos.

Ulysse; Ridan

WoW! Found another one! And listen it! “Ulysse” is the most gracious song I ever post! La plus jolie! And was composed and sung by a rapper. What a crazy country! Where even the rappers are sensitive! J'aime la France!

Ridan, whose real name is Nadir Kouidri (read Ridan backwards), mixes his influence of rap with what the french people call varieté, a kind of light pop. So the result is a calm and relaxing melody with politicized and “rough” lyrics.
To write “Ulysse” Ridan was inspired by a famous poem by Joachim du Bellay. The poem is here for those who have patience. ^^

Does the whistle was also inspired by the poem? If someone will read it or have already read it and could tell me, please, don't be shy!

The music video is so dreamlike and beautiful than the song. The only thing I can say is... Enjoy it! Appréciez!

Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere; Raphaël Haroche

Salut, mes amis de la France! This week I will try to post only french songs! Seulement les chansons françaises! It's a very difficult challenge, but at least I have one whistling tune and it's a beginning. However, it's monday and I'll have the rest of the week to find another ones.

Our singer of the day born in Boulogne-Billancourt in November 1975, performs only under his first name, writes his own songs and in 2005 released his third album “Caravane”, which led him to the mainstream, and in this album there is our song.

“Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere” is about a relationship that ends and he finds himself between thoughs of the ruthless life that passes by and the memories of his lost love. Raphaël sings with deep sensitivity and when he whistles it seemed to me our resignation that doesn't dare to face the death.

In a website dedicated to him there is a compilation of many interviews he did, and about this song he said:

Ai-je tort de dire que la 'Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere' tient beaucoup à 'Coup de Tête', le film de Jean Jacques Annaud?

“Raphaël: La chanson est sortie très instinctivement. Je ne sais jamais vraiment pourquoi je fait les choses jusqu'au moment où je ne me pose plus de questions et que je sais qu'elles sont faites. Le titre est venu presque comme de l'écriture automatique. C'est un peu ce que moi je traversais: j'avais arrêté la clope, l'alcool et pleins d'autres trucs qui m'arrivaient. C'est le sentiment d'un mec qui vivrait à la minute même qui n'est même pas au jour le jour mais dans l'instant. Un gars qui prend ce qui arrive et j'avais l'image de ce type en tête, toute l'émotion qu'il dégage de très fort et sincère, comme Léotard ou Bohringer. Il y a tout ce côté un peu brûlé, écorché vif qui me plait bien en eux."

“Raphaël: C’est un hommage. Pour moi, c’est le type qui incarne ce romantisme, ce côté écorché, cette fragilité et, en même temps, cette liberté qu’ont les artistes. Dewaere était quelqu’un de talentueux, doué. On ne sait pas pourquoi, il suffit de le voir, il bouleverse. Un peu comme Philippe Léotard. Ce sont des mecs très différents de moi auxquels je ne m’identifie pas forcément, pour qui j’ai beaucoup de tendresse. J’ai le sentiment que ce sont des êtres qui se détruisaient. Ils brûlaient leur vie. Ce sont des destins émouvants.

“Raphaël: C'est une chanson plus sur un personnage qui me fait penser à ce comédien , l'idée c'est un type qui n'a ni passé ni avenir, un type dont on ne sait pas s'il va vous embrasser ou se jeter dans la Seine.

“Tout le monde me conseillait d'enlever cette chanson de l'album, pour moi c'était inconcevable. C'est l'histoire d'un type qui ne vit pas au jour le jour, mais minute par minute, comme un oiseau sur la branche, l'histoire d'un type perdu, très énergique et desespéré en même temps. J'étais un peu dans cet état lorsque j'ai composé cette chanson.”

Centerfold; J. Geils Band

The last but not the least, J. Geils Band with Centerfold. I think that Rolling Stone magazine put in its list only songs that were worldwide hits in their respective times and it chose to mix up the stiles of the songs witch appear in it (power ballad, indie rock, soul, etc.). Its staff made a complete and consistent playlist with so many good choices and only 6 places. Good work!

"Centerfold" is the bigger success of J. Geils Band. It reached #1 on US Bilboard Hot 100 and stayed there for six weeks and reached #4 on UK Single Charts. The song lists at #52 on Billboard's All Time Top Songs.

Peter Wolf, the vocalist, wrote "Centerfold" and some guess he wanted to mean his relationship with Angel Tompkins, even because the chorus says "my angel is the centerfold". The whistling in this song is right in the end, in the fade out part. Which means that if you wanna listen it you will have to listen the entire song. But it's not a problem — it's a amazing song.

The videoclip is very cool. I found in Wikipedia: "The music video starts out with Peter Wolf going to the classroom and looking through a magazine which he mentions his girlfriend is in. Some girls then start dancing in a line wearing slips. Afterwards, more girls appear in the whole classroom in negligees dancing, smiling, and playing patty cake. Wolf then hands a couple of uniforms to two of the girls. Later on, the girls appear in cheerleading sweatshirts resembling a 1980s style dress. After Wolf is knocked out by the girls with books, a party begins with the cheerleaders. The video ends with Wolf running out of the school in the company of four girls doing cartwheels."
