If Love Is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags); Maria McKee

My heart is empty.
Your eyes are dull.
Once we were hungry,
Now we are full.
These chains that bind us,
Can't beat these chains.
If love is shelter,
I'm gonna walk in the rain.

You were my angel.
Now, you are real.
So like a stranger,
Colder than steel.
The morning after,
You know what you bring.
If love is a red dress,
Well, hang me in rags.

Away.
There goes the fairy tale.
Lord, ain't it a shame?
In all this comfort,
I can't take the strain.

If we played even,
I'd be your queen.
But someone was cheatin'.
And it wasn't me.
I've laid it on the table,
You had something back.
If love is Aces,
Give me the Jack.

5 Years Time; Noah & the Whale

Oh in five years time we could be walking round a zoo
With the sun shining down over me and you
And there'll be love in the bodies of the elephants too
And I'll put my hand over your eyes, but you'll peek through

And there'll be sun sun sun
All over our bodies
And sun sun sun
All down my neck
Oh and sun sun sun
All over our faces
And sun sun sun
So what the heck

Cos we'll be laughing at each others silly little jokes
And we'll be laughing about how we used to smoke
All those stupid little cigarettes
And drink stupid wine
Cos it's what we needed to have a good time

But it was fun fun fun
When we were drinking
It was fun fun fun
When we were drunk
And it was fun fun fun
When we were dancing
It was fun fun fun
Oh it was fun

Well then I look at you and say
This is the happiest that I've ever been
And I'll say I no longer feel I have to be James Dean
And she'd say
Yeah well I feel pretty happy too
And I'm always pretty happy when I'm just kicking back with you

And it'll be
Love love love
All through our bodies
And love love love
All through our minds
And it'll be Love love love
All over her face
And Love love love
All over mine

And though its nearly all these moments are just in my head
I'll be thinking ‘bout them as I'm lying in bed
And I know that none of it will even come true
But in my mind I'm havin' a pretty good time with you

Oh in Five years time
I might not know you
In Five years time
We might not speak
Oh In five years time
We might not get along
In five years time
You might just prove me wrong

But there'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love
Wherever you go
There'll be love love love

Wherever you go there'll be love

Van Helsing Boombox; Man Man

The band's website says on its frontpage:

“MAN MAN” is an experimental band which has its origin in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Their musical genre is characterized through its experimental rock, their musical style, however, described as Viking-vaudeville, maniac Gypsy Jazz. Furthermore the band is known for their exuberant live performances since it was founded in 2003. When performing, every member of the band dresses in a white outfit as well as wears specific war paint.

Moreover it has to be said that the band uses pseudonyms for their members. So the front man of “MAN MAN” is called Honus Honus (real name: Ryan Kattner). The other members of the band are Pow Pow (real name: Christopher Powell), Critter Crat (formerly known as “Crougar”, real name: Russell Higbee), and Chang Wang (real name: Billy Dufala). Prior to deciding on the band name “MAN MAN”, the band was named “Gamelon” and for a while “Magic Blood”.

According to Wikipedia, "The album was placed on Obscure Sound's list of the best albums of 2006 at number 34 and Pitchfork's list of the top 50 albums of 2006 at number 20; (...) Pitchfork Media also listed the song 'Van Helsing Boombox' as the 350th best song of the 2000's."

Here it's the Man Man MySpace for you who became interested in the band. ^^
Only time will tell if I'll allow
the scenery around to eat me alive

I want to sleep for weeks like a dog at her feet
even though I know it won't work out in the long run
so I burn down the wall, breathe my good shadow
those arms I once knew, hold me like gold
I learn how to speak a forgotten language
I fall in the sea but forget how to swim

When anything that's anything becomes nothing that's
everything
and nothing is the only thing you ever seem to have

but only time will tell if I'll allow
the scenery around to eat me alive

I want to sleep for weeks like a dog at her feet
even though I know it won't work out in the long run
so I burn down the bone, breathe my good shadow
those arms I once knew, hold me like gold
I learn how to speak a defeated language
I fall in the street as I howl at the moon

When anything that's anything becomes nothing that's
everything
and nothing is the only thing you ever seem to have

Goodbye Stranger; Supertramp

According to AllMusic Guides, this is the history of Supertramp:

Once upon a time in 1969, a young Dutch millionaire by the name of Stanley August Miesegaes gave his acquaintance, vocalist and keyboardist Rick Davies, a "genuine opportunity" to form his own band; he could form the band of his dreams and Miesegaes would pay for it. After placing an ad in Melody Maker, Davies assembled Supertramp alongside co-founders Roger Hodgson (vocals, piano, guitar, cello), Richard Palmer (vocals, guitar, balalaika), and former stage actor Robert Millar (percussion, harmonica). Supertramp released two long-winded progressive rock albums before Miesegaes withdrew his support, and by early 1972, Davies and Hodgson were the only founding members remaining. The pair began an extensive search for replacements and soon pieced together the lineup that would be responsible for Supertramp's definitive sound, comprising new members Doug Thomson (bass), Bob Siebenberg (percussion), and John Helliwell (woodwinds, saxophone, keyboards).

With no money or fan base to speak of, the expanded Supertramp was forced to redesign their sound. Coming up with a more pop-oriented form of progressive rock, the band had a hit with their third album, Crime of the Century. Throughout the decade, Supertramp had a number of best-selling albums, culminating in their 1979 masterpiece Breakfast in America. Breakfast in America marked their first album that tipped the scale completely in the favor of pop songs; on the strength of the hit singles "Goodbye Stranger," "Logical Song," and "Take the Long Way Home," it sold over 18 million copies worldwide. After that album, Supertramp continued to develop a more R&B-flavored style; the change in direction was successful on 1982's Famous Last Words, but the band soon ran out of hits. Hodgson left in 1983 to mount a solo career, and Supertramp continued to sporadically record and tour into the 21st century.

---

According to Wikipedia, "Goodbye Stranger" is a song by Supertramp, which first appeared on their 1979 album Breakfast in America. John Helliwell made the back vocals and the whistling. It reached #15 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And i really have enjoyed my stay
But i must be moving on

Like a king without a castle
Like a queen without a throne
I´m an early morning lover
And i must be moving on

Now i believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But i have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth

Like a ship without an anchor
Like a slave without a chain
Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins

And i will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I´ll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

Goodbye stranger it´s been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true

Goodbye mary, goodbye jane
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow feel no pain

Sweet devotion
It's not for me
Just give me motion
And set me free
And the land and the ocean
Far away
It's the life i've chosen
Every day
So goodbye mary, goodbye jane
Will we ever meet again (x2)

Now some they do and some they don´t
And some you just can´t tell
And some they will and some they won´t
With some it´s just as well

You can laugh at my behaviour
That´ll never bother me
Say the devil is my savior
But i don´t pay no heed

And i will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I´ll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

Goodbye stranger it´s been nice
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true

Goodbye mary, goodbye jane
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow feel no pain

Sweet devotion
It's not for me
Just give me motion
And set me free
And the Land and the Ocean
Far Away
It's the life I've chosen
Every Day
So now i'm leaving, got to go, hit the road
I'm saying once again
Oh yes i'm leaving, got to go, got to go
I'm sorry i must tell you
So goodbye mary, goodbye jane
Will we ever meet again (x2)

I believe, yes i've got to get away

Aretha, Sing One for Me; Cat Power

My best present (the artist who makes it worth all this work on my blog) was definitely Cat Power. I remember my first posts and she was the only one I didn't know on one list of five-best whistling songs [here]... So I started to listen to Chan's songs. Since then I have had terrific moments of delight!

All of Cat Power's albums are so touching... "The Greatest", "You Are Free", "Dear Sir"... all of them have great pieces of gold! I only have to thank Chan Marshall for exist! *-*

"Aretha, Sing One for Me" is in the cover album "Jukebox" from 2008. It was written by J. Harris and Eugene Williams; it was first recorded by George Jackson, here is Jackson's interpretation record, without whistlings.¹

Me and my baby
We had a big fight
We ended our romance
The same night
In an angry mood
He walked out the door
I said this song's
Going to
An Aretha Franklin show

Hey, Aretha
Sing one for me
Let him know
Our life's in misery
Will you sing a song
That will touch his heart
And make him sorry
That we are apart

I don't know
If taking requests
Is part of your show
Do me this favor
And I'll love you forever
Many romances
Have been saved
By your sound
You've touched
So many lovers
So many times

Yes, Aretha
Sing one for me
Let him know
My life's in misery
Will you sing a song
That will touch his heart
And make him sorry
That we ever parted

"Think", "Respect"
"Call Me"
"A Bridge Over Troubled Waters"
and
"I Can't See Myself Leaving You"

Hey, Aretha
Sing one for me
Let him know
I'm as miserable
As a woman could be
Sing a song
That'll touch his heart
So he'll be sorry
That we are apart

"Think", "Respect"
"Call Me"
"I Never Loved a Man Like I Love You"
and
"I Can't See Myself Leaving You"

Hysteric; Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah Yeah Yeahs is one of the greatest indie rock bands from now "to infinity... and beyond!" HAHAHA. Or better: YYYs is art rock! It is "the most beautiful instance of art rock soever", because "it disrupts with any basic references of the tradicional rock music", said one productor friend of mine.

This power trio was formed in New York in 2000. But they are now living in LA.

"Hysteric" was released in Yeah Yeah Yeahs' lattest album and Karen O, interviewed by The Sun, said about this album that "This is a new era for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

"This record got our confidence back and was really a move towards enjoying being in a band again. We started off writing this record with guitars, but gradually the sound developed into what you hear now.

"We chose synths because they allow for more space. They have a quality which is different to Nick's grungy guitar sound. But, at the same time, Nick's synth work mimics what he does on the guitar. So in a way it was a natural progression.
"

No Longer No Longer

Heels turned black.
The cinders they splinter
And light the path
These strange steps
Trace us back trace us back

Flow sweetly hang heavy
